St John's Church, Upper Norwood
Sylvan Road, Upper Norwood, London SE19 2RX
St John the Evangelist's church is a large red brick building that was consecrated in 1887 having replaced a temporary iron construction that had been built to service the fast-growing surrounding London suburbs of the era. For the new building, the parish engaged the services of John Loughborough Pearson, an eminent ecclesiastical architect who had already designed a number of churches in the Gothic Revival style which was at the height of fashion in Victorian Britain.
The 160-foot long building has two turrets at its west end and it was supposed to have included a 200-foot tower over the south transept as part of the conditions set by the Church Commissioners but financial difficulties at the time meant that the building today remains spireless.
