Merton SingFest 2018

SingFest, a new Merton choral festival, was launched to great acclaim in October 2017, with a collaboration between Wimbledon Choral Society, the Merton Music Foundation (MMF) and Wimbledon's new professional chamber choir, Sonoro.   This year's festival will be between 13-17 October 2018.
The festival brings the community together in celebration of Merton's rich and varied choral talent, because we believe strongly that singing is good for everyone.  The principal objective of the SingFest is to showcase singing across the borough, emphasising that there are singing groups for all levels and interests: from the likes of Wimbledon Community Chorus to smaller groups like the Trinity URC church choir.
Wimbledon Choral Society celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2015. One of our 'next century' objectives is to re-establish stronger links with our local community. The sad fact is that for many years there hasn't been a venue large enough in Wimbledon for us to mount a full scale concert (we have about 180 active singers), so although we rehearse in Wimbledon, and most members are from south-west London, our visibility in the borough is lower than we would like it to be. That's why we're enthusiastic supporters of the Wimbledon concert hall initiative and so pleased to join with MMF in the Merton SingFest.
The Merton Music Foundation is run by Soo Bishop (left) and is a registered charity established in March 1991. Its charitable aim is: "To advance music education within a framework of the arts for the benefit of the public of the London Borough of Merton and elsewhere..." See www.mmf.org.uk for further details.
The planned programme for this year's festival is shown below and has three main areas - adult choirs, childrens' choirs and a come-and-sing in gospel style.   This latter item proved to be very popular last year under the dynamic leadership of Pete Churchill (right), who will be running it again this year.
The strong schools programme masterminded by Soo will be great fun for youngsters.
