[Neil Ferris' first concert as Music Director of Wimbledon Choral Society]
SC

After 30 years at the helm, Michael Ashcroft stood down as Music Director and the Society welcomed Neil Ferris to take on this role.   Under Michael, the choir had grown considerably in both numbers and reputation, becoming a 'can-do' group holding no fear of taking on the great works in the choral repertoire.  This provided a solid foundation on which Neil could work to take WCS further on its journey by honing the vocal production and sound in performance, and enhancing the choir's reputation by widening and stretching its repertoire.

The 1979-1980 season marked the first with Michael Ashcroft as Musical Director. In the programme notes for his first concert, it reads "Mr Ashcroft makes his début with Wimbledon Choral Society this evening, and looks forward to a long and happy assocation." Prophetic words, indeed.
